Today is the day of my grandfather's funeral.
Tensions are high and I am nervous that at any moment I will well up with tears. This happens to be the first death in my family that I am really aware of. As a very small kid, I only attended one or two funerals. Growing up seeing them in movies, I always assumed you must wear all black. That's how funerals were depicted so that's what I thought.
However, that is not actually a custom for a Jewish funeral, which my grandfather is having. It feels gauche to discuss funeral fashion but I feel odd attending in a burnt orange, patterned dress. My mom has assured me it is appropriate but I still don't feel right. I pictured attending a funeral in black tights, a black dress, and sharp black blazer, and for it to be pouring rain outside. I guess Hollywood funerals set a precedent for me.
All I can say is, life certainly is not Hollywood and there is no team of costume designers to help you get ready for what life throws at you.
